I am a patient here at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Ceneter in Cincinati, Ohio. And while I was in the child life in the activity center, one of the parents from my same unit as me suggested a career like job besides me really wanting to be a child life specialist. I was wondering what kind of information I should know about.School and colleges locations that are local or well known colleges, information, what art therapy entitles, education wise, volunteer work, and degrees etc and also your own experience. Thanks again and cant wait to see everyones response to my email. Make sure you say that you are talking about my comment(“Holly Lapper, Cincinnati Childrens, Art Therapy”). Please and Thank you.

Holly Lapper, Cincinnati Childrens, Art Therapy

Hello- Holly! I also live in the Cincinnati area and am interested in art therapy. I am an art teacher and was interested in getting a masters in art therapy. Unfortunately I was not able to find a program within my area. I am unable/ willing to move for school. I did see a program at St Mary’s of the Woods that was part online and part in class. I ended up enrolling in graduate school for special education online. I figured that would allow me to work in a school setting using art in a way that is beneficial to special needs.

As far volunteer work goes, I would look into gaining experience at museums (Cincinnati art museum may need some extra help), community centers, art galleries. Anything that allows you to gain experience in the art world as well as develop relationships with people.

Don’t forget to work on your own artwork as well. Take classes, learn about new artist, read art history, explore different mediums.

Best of luck and best wishes!

I really enjoyed reading both of your comments. I too am very interested in a career in Art Therapy. As a current cosmetologist/ hair stylist I have truly seen how color and inner expressions can truly make breakthroughs in anyone’s life. Thank you for the ideas of volunteer work and reading up on art history. I wish you both the best of luck with any career you choose.

I have sold out my heart and brain completely to becoming an Art Therapist. I LOVE Art Therapy, I belive in Art Therapy, and I am actually GREAT at Art Therapy. I have earned my Master’s Degree in art Therapy at an accredited program. Actually a very prestigious program in the history of AATA. And now, I live in Ohio. I moved here on purpose so that I can serve those in the rural areas where most practitioners won’t set up a practice because of the poverty level. BUT…I CANNOT FIND ANY JOB AS AN ART THERAPIST. I am so discouraged. I can’t tell you how often I say to my heart, “Why did you spend so much time, love and money on this degree when there is no place for you to serve and help the hurting?” I will not give up, but I must share with the new students who have stars in their eyes and hope in their hearts, and who want to give their ALL to those suffering people, that there just aren’t any positions around. And the ones that are there, are taken already. I am not a quitter, I am, in fact, a survivor of many of life’s challenges. But I am frustrated and actually scared that I will never be able to find an Art Therapy job. All I keep hearing is that they want me to “volunteer” or give the managers of various programs or healthcare organizations “MY” ideas. Does any seasoned Art Therapist in Ohio have any hope for me? There are people doing Arts and Crafts programs or “afternoons at the library for art and play”, and they are getting all the participants, but there are not people who will pay for therapy. Nor are there Psychiatrists or Psychologists who will refer to an art therapist, nor hospitals who will hire one. I need encouragement!! 🙁

Don’t know where you are in Ohio but it might be a good idea for you to consider speaking with your judge in your community. A lot of times the judges will make the men and women go to programs to help them and better their lives your program art therapy can certainly do that. ??

Hello everyone, I have my MSW and MA in psychology. I am incorporating Art therapy type activities on the acute psychiatric unit I work on and I am very excited. I too live in Ohio and could not find any Graduate programs for Art therapy, although Capital has a good program from undergrad. Social work allows you to be creative with your therapy, which is why I like it, but I am interested in taking classes regarding other art therapy interventions. Any thoughts?

I moved two Ohio 2 years ago, from Germany. There I worked as a pre-school teacher with special needs adults and my main work area there was doing art projects with them, like painting and working with clay. I was going to start school there for art therapy, because it was so much fun and amazing to see the approvements the adults made! I myself love to do art work!
I moved to the states with my fiance and we travel for his business 9-10 months out of the year. I want to use this time to get my degree in art therapy. Also, my pre-school teacher degree from germany isn’t entirely recognized here, so I need to get a hire degree to be able to work here.
What I found out so far is, that art therapy is a masters degree and I have to get my bachelors degree first, is this right?
I found an online college to earn my bachelors degree, since I travel all year long I have to start out with online study, anyway, I’m not sure how to go about this. I want to work with special needs as an art therapist. does my bachelors degree have to be in a certain field to be able to continue with a masters in art therapy? I mean do I have to get a bachelors in psychology or special ed or …..? What they over me is a bachelor in education, is that good enough to a master in artherapy afterwards?

Thank you for any advise that you give me
    Jessy

I am a current senior at a high school in Ohio. I already have my college choice for my first year, which is at a community college. For the previous years after that, I would like to major in Art Therapy. I would like to stay in Ohio for college, but I am unable to find any universities that offer the course except for Capital. If you have any information on Art Therapy and where to find courses on it, please let me know!

Ursuline college near Cleveland, OH, has a very good art therapy program. It is fully accredited and is a Masters program as well. It is not an online program.

I am currently in the Master’s Art Therapy and Counseling Program at Ursuline College. It is a great program (in the process of becoming an accredited program), in which you will get out of it what you put in. I have not heard of any issues with people trying to find positions after graduation because it does incorporate the Counseling aspect. It is more difficult to get a position without it and that is why Ursuline has incorporated the master’s in counseling piece. So I say go for it… to anyone who is thinking about, but be ready to put in a lot of hard work and hours to get the most out of it. Also, I think it important to get lots of information from the school… set up a meeting with Gail Rule-Hoffmann! She is more than willing to answer your questions and give you feedback on the program!

I live in Ohio, but in a rural area and am not wanting to drive a long distance to school everyday or room in a dorm. I am looking for some advice or assistance in my problem. Please e-mail me if you have anything for me! Thank you so much!

I currently have a Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art and a Master’s degree in Social Work, and have completed the necessary requirements to obtain my Independent Social Work license. With this background, would it make obtaining certification as an Art Therapist any easier or faster? I am having a difficult time finding any information to clear this up for me.

My understanding is Cleveland State also offers a degree in Art Therapy. I am currently going to Tri-C, with plans to transfer to Cleveland State to get my bachelors degree in Art Therapy and move on to my Masters. Feeling a little discouraged after reading some of the post saying they can not find work. I am a late bloomer and don’t have years to wait for an opening. I will continue to move forward with my eyes wide open.

Does anybody know of a dual program, similar to programs that are a combination of MFT and Art Therapy, but rather Social Work and Art Therapy?
