Are all of these schools private?

i know that CUNY schools, that are not private, offer the Unique and Interdisciplinary Studies program for ungraduate students, which lets the students choose the courses that they want/need to take in order to make your own degree. That’s what I’m doing to study art therapy, instead of double majoring in Psych and Art.

Hello Nonini, would love to speak with you more about how you are pursing an art therapy degree at CUNY, something that my sister is interested in. What classes are you taking? Did you meet with an academic advisor who has helped you choose clases?

Some of these schools are NOT accredited and should be noted as such. Also anyone interested in an undergrad Art Therapy program should be advised that they cannot legally practice as a creative arts therapist. NYU is by far the best program in the country!

Art therapists are trained in a traditional university classroom setting, in a medical school or teaching hospital setting or in a fine art studio school setting.
Art therapy trainees mostly learn assessment and treatment skills from the study of psychopathology and from looking at examples of mostly unhealthy patient art and then practicing their assessment and treatment skills in a clinically supervised environment making little art of their own throughout the process.
Some programs emphasize experiential learning from the creative act and require the regular practice of making art in the studio setting as an integrated and necessary compliment to one’s clinical studies.
Are you more artist or more psychologist? Where are you on the continuum? Where is your creative health and healing? Where do you belong?

Thanks for this resource! I currently have a BA in Psychology, and I live right by Hofstra, so I’m thinking about getting an MA in Creative Arts Therapy or something related.

    Hello,

I am currently working on a BFA (Bachelors in Fine Arts) and am planning on becoming an art therapist. I was advised by someone in the art education field that it is better to have a foundation in studio art for my Bachelors and then go ahead for the Masters in Art Theraphy. Had I been advised correctly? I will be graduating in about a year an a half so I would like to get some better advice on how I can be admitted to a Graduate school, majoring in Art Therapy.

I did BA in find art (sculpture) and MA in fashion & textile design in Italy.

I’d love to start my studies to be an art therapist(related to family and group art therapy) in NY.
i did look for some schools in NY such as Pratt,SVA,NYU but i really don’t know what to start and how.

Would you help me to find out
where can i get a credits for basic psychology and also other requirements if its needed?
what do i need to do ? what do i need to start? (do i need to just apply a BA which has an art therapy course? or MP?)
can i go to CUNY college to have some credits to go to other school (NYU) for PhD ?

I currently have BA in family and child studies with a p-3 teaching cert. However, I felt like it just doesn’t fit. I love working with others and helping others so I thought teaching was it for me…
I currently work as a one-to-instructor for children with autism in which they get art therapy twice a week. I fell in love. I have a strong feeling that this is what I should be doing.
Where do I go from here? I thought I could get my MA in art therapy but is that far fetched?

    Hello

I was just wondering how to begin a Bachelor degree in Art Therapy, when my initial two years and a half have little to do with that. I was oriented wrong, and was lead to believe there was no way to have a bach in Art Therapy. How long do I need to be a resident of NY to be accepted? How do I apply from another country? Is there anyway I’d be accepted from PR? I’d be mighty grateful if someone could clarify this for me. Thanks a lot for your helpful website.

My daughter is determined to be an art therapist and is presently in her undergraduate college search. What is the best undergraduate means to prepare for a an MA in Art Therapy program? Should she go liberal arts and double major in Art and Psychology? Is it worth going to an art school and majoring in art if art therapy is the goal? What else can she be doing to help imrpove chances of getting into an Art Therapy MA program? I would want her to have a strong basis in clinical work and counseling. I’m so lost!

Hi, I am currently completing my Honours in Curatorship. I have a Degree in Fine Art. I would like to study abroad doing Art Therapy.
I am from South Africa. Any advise on how to apply, for scholarships as well as a Masters programme focusing on Art Therapy. Do i need to have studied psychology? Or would the institution offer lessons or basic classes on an over view of psychology?

    Regard
    Mosa 🙂

    Hi
I have an MFA from Pratt, have a fairly active art career showing with a gallery for 20 yrs.- in NYC.
Wondering about art therapy as both a way to increase income as well as an interesting way to help others thru beauty.
Would I look at masters programs for art therapy or do I need to start at undergrad level?
I live upstate near New Palz .
Would love any suggestions or experience related comments.
    Thanks

    Hello,
My daughter is a freshman at LSU in Baton Rouge, LA and she would like to become an art therapist working with disabled children. Can you tell me what major she should pursue prior to Art Therapy School? Her current major is Psychology, however we have also heard, that she could major in Early Childhood or Family Counseling or Early Education.

    Thank you!
