Introducing the Art Therapy Education Section

This is a quick update to let you know that we’re adding an Art Therapy Education section to help out those interested in becoming professional art therapists, or interested in expanding their knowledge and skills with an art therapy education.

The schools section has been updated with schools from a variety of states and one from Canada. We hope to add more as we learn about them. We’d love it if you added any recommendations, testimonials, or even just support for your alma mater in the comments.

We will be expanding the schools and education section as time goes on, but if you have any suggestions for what we should add to either section, please leave these in the comments, we’d really appreciate it!

Thank you so much for this addition to your site.
I am returning to school for the spring semester and I will be seeking a degree in art therapy. I have a multitude of psych classes, but the university where I attended only had two art therapy classes which I did attend. I have worked in the mental health field, but have always been an artist at heart. I am really looking forward to your information. Thanks, again, Mary

Here in Australia we have three universities offering a Masters of Arts (art therapy). The University of Western Sydney, La Trobe University, the University of Queensland and the Melbourne Institute for Experiential and Creative Arts Therapy. I hope you’ll consider studying here!

Any information on what majors to take in undergraduate when there isn’t exactly an art therapy program available. Is Social Work acceptable or does it have to be Psychology (along with the studio art credits of course)?

@Kristen I would suggest talking to a career counselor at your school or someone from a potential art therapy graduate program. They can talk you through the best course of action.

@Joanne Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll be sure to add them to the list!

I have a problem. I am a mother of two very young girls and I am living on the really last point of Namibia, Afrika. I want to become an art therapist, but can only study over distance learning. My dream is to open my own center and show Namibia the possibilties with this kind of therapy.
Can anyone help me with informations?

    Hi there!

I am looking to participate in a volunteer Art Therapy placement in the US in April/May 2012, after I graduate in a Diploma of Art Therapy, from an Australian Art Therapy school (IKON). I currently live and work in Alice Springs, Central Australia, as an Occupational Therapist I where I also provide Art Therapy services to adults with mental health difficulties and cognitive impairment.

I plan to travel to Louisiana (for the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival) and am looking for a placement opportunity anywhere is the South, with an Art Therapy organisation or individual for 2-6 weeks to further my learning. I hope to assist practically or therapeutically in art-based programs, to ‘watch and learn’ and be generally helpful. I consider myself to have highly developed communication, collaboration skills, initiative and flexibility. I am also independent and well travelled.

My work history is extensive – I have 11 years clinical experience as a registered Occupational Therapist (BAppScOT) in diverse settings with a culturally varied client base.

I can be contacted via email or Scype to discuss possibilities, and am happy to provide my resume and references. Please feel free to refer my details to other Art Therapists who may be interested. I very much look forward to hearing from you.

    Kind regards,

    Robyn George

    Thanks for information
I have a Bachelor of Visual Arts (painting), and at the moment I am studying Fine Arts (MA).
I want to know what are the needs for some one like me to be able to apply for a master degree in Art Therapy.

    Best,
    Toeh

Agnes Sackitey, 23 january 2016. I have a degree in Art Education, studied Art therapy as a course and have gone through a couple of Art therapy workshops. I have high interest in pursueing it further. As an education officer in Ghana I realise the need for this course in our education sector, therefore currently doing a project for my masters programme to promote art therapy in my country. I would like to know if i can access a scholarship for further studies in Art therapy.
