I’m a photography major from Howard university. I just graduated in Dec. I have to take a few psych courses to apply to fsu in the fall. I’m really worried bc FSU is my dream program but I know that I had some problems with my school and my gpa is not what I want it to be and I know I’m going to have to take my GRE’s which worries me even more. What score do you think is it good score to get into FSU? And what are some other things I should look out for

I currently attend Eckerd College and it is a great school, however they do not have an Art Therapy program. I am majoring in Visual Arts and minoring in psychology to fulfill the requirements for graduate school (I plan to attend FSU). I do know of an Eckerd College graduate who went on to open a business called “Creative Clay”. It provides art workshops for people with disabilities. Florida is an excellent state for the art therapy field.

Is it a legit program? Could you check it out, please and thank you!

I am currently applying to Art Therapy programs and I live in Florida. The school I attend does not have an undergraduate art therapy program, but that is not necessary for admission to a master’s degree program. I am a Fine Arts major with 15 credits of Psychology. You can also be a Psychology major and take art classes. So long as you fulfill the prerequisites for graduate programs in Art Therapy you should qualify. Typically, this means 18 credits studio art, and 12-18 credits psychology including abnormal, developmental, and personality psychology. Some colleges also recommend an art education class and statistics. If you lacking some of these credits you may make them up concurrently with your Master’s degree.

Cristina, I also go to UF. To be a certified Art Therapist, you must have a master’s degree in Art Therapy or an equivalent degree from an accredited institution. The exact requirements can be found on the American Art Therapy Associations website. UF’s certificate program would be a good start on your way, however, make sure it allows you to get the prerequisites you need for admission into graduate school.

I will end up with a Bachelor of Arts with a pre-professional concentration in Art Therapy. Its designed to get you into Grad School. Its a good school, Im learning alot. Id reccommend it, but you cannot go online to UT. You have to show up. You could possibly do some HCC or SPC online courses and then transfer, but you have to actually attend class at UT. You have to have a Masters level to be an art therapist anyway. You could take the same courses at any school and probably still get into Grad School for Art Therapy.

It is great. We have really great professors, and a great mix of theory and practice. FSU has suspended their UNDERGRADUATE art ed program, but they still have their Masters program and ONE OF THE ONLY DOCTORAL programs in the nation. There are great things happening at FSU’s program.

I would suggest getting into contact with their director of Art Therapy department Marcia Rosal (terrific person and wonderful faculty member) to get specifics. I graduated from FSU’s Art Therapy Program and could not have been happier with the education that I received and the faculty that I had the pleasure of working with. My class attended many conferences in which we were much more prepared than most other students attending (and some of the professionals). It is a program that focuses on a nice mix of research and application while still offering a good amount of history on which the profession was born. I would recommend the program to anyone interested in art therapy!
Best of luck in your school searches.

They offer a Bachelor in Arts in Art with Pre-Professional Concentration in Art Therapy…you would still need to go to a separate school that offers the Masters degree (only one in FL is FSU).
