I have my MS in school psychology, my BA in Fine Art (with an emphasis in painting and drawing), and a minor in psychology. I hold three credentials in the following areas: pupil personnel services (to work in special education), a single subject in Art (to teach in junior high or high school), and a multiple subject credential (to teach elementary school)–All my credentials are current. I have been doing studio art and mural painting for the last 16 years in order to stay home and raise my children. What other coursework would be necessary to get my certification or license as an art therapist?

expressive art modes, placing the person at the center of his/her learning. Qualities such as

empathic understanding, acceptance, and congruence are emphasized.

By combining different expressive modes, a process may evolve for releasing

more of a person’s creative potential. Natalie Rogers’ (1985b) theorizes that writing

improves our thinking, painting changes our feelings, movement integrates our body, mind,

spirit, and sound opens us to channels of energy.

Creativity is fostered when the facilitator permits the individual complete freedom to

express feelings in symbolic form. She calls the process the ” creative connection”

I’m an undergrad student studying Psychology and I’m very interested in art therapy since I was able to effectively channel and cope better with my depression and anxiety by creating art. Looking for volunteer opportunities for school applications and it would be great to volunteer for something I am so interested in and I hope becomes even more prevalent and supported in the mental health community as opposed to relying solely on pharmaceuticals

It’s an institute that provides certification in movement based arts therapy and once completed, I believe you can also use the training to apply to become a movement or expressive arts therapist. I am considering applying right now!!

I am just graduating from CSUBakersfield with my BA in Psychology and am searching for a school that I can ultimately do both a MA in Psych and art therapy, however, my travel allowance is very slim. Is there a way to take my MA online and the Art Therapy at the same time????

Any suggestions would be great, especially since the time to sign up is now.

Thank you,
Jodi

Thank you for your excellent blog. Just FYI: in San Diego the Expressive Arts Institute offers course work leading to a master’s degree (in conjunction with the European Graduate School in Swizterland) or training and education for those with a California license which qualifies people to gain the REAT (Registered Expressive Arts Therapists) from IEATA (the International Expressive Arts Therapy Association). We are intermodal; that is, teach dance, drama, music, poetry and visual arts in an integrated way. Our program is 12 years old. Small, but potent! If you Google us, you will finds all our contact info on our web site – or you can email me for it if you would like to add us to your list. It isn’t exactly “art therapy” but closely related! Cheers! Judith

I am a Certified Creative Journal Expressive Arts facilitator as well as Certified Visioning(R) Life coach.

I received both certifications through a program designed by Lucia Capacchione, PhD, ATR and REAT.

The first program is a year long program where you attend to week long intensives and the Visioning(R) coach training is a 6 month program.

More info is at http://www.luciac.com

Also, I do write about my experience with Visioning(R) on my own blog accessed at http://www.writeinside.com, if interested.
