I would be interested to learn more on how to practice art therapy in therapeutic settings. From my experience as a psychologist, I find it very useful, especially when dealing with Autistic and ODD children. I live in Toronto and I checked few courses around here, but neither impressed me much (re practicality/level). Please let me know if you know any high quality art therapy course in Eastern Canada or US.
Thanks,

I was lucky enough to find out about art therapy 2 years ago and realize thats the direction I am heading. I attend SIUE in edardsville illinois, I am a super senior right now. My major is psych and minor is studio art. The is not any close AT schools around, but we have the program here . The problem is that its 3 years long and super competative. they only take 10 students a year I am praying that I will be one of the 10 :)

I am an Art Instructor/Therapist. Recently a very talented student of mine had her first art show at the Yergin Gallery in Jacksonville, FL. All of her art work has a pink ribbon discretely entwined in each piece. She is a breast cancer survivor and was treated for her cancer immediately following the birth of her second daughter. Her art reflects the joy she finds in life instead of the struggle she has gone through to keep her life. Her main goal is to make people smile. Her art work has proven her to be successful in her goal. I am a firm believer in Art Therapy!

I am 45yr old & in college. I enrolled with my son 4yr ago. He is a gifted artist & was always failing in school. I was a drop out so I put us both on a path to help each other. We both went from failures to 3.5gpa's. Recently I was asked "What do you want to be when you grow up?" My 1st response "A Princess!" but I know I need to do something while I wait for Prince Charming. It struck me like a hammer... there are 2 major events of my life where ART SAVED ME. 1ST 15+ yr ago, I was having a mental/ emotional crisis. It was bad enough that I went to counceling. One day she asked me to write a short poem to be submitted to "Cild Abuse Awareness". My problem was I had way to much info in my head to write something small. I asked if I could draw a picture & she said yes. It was like a key that finally opened the door. I drew over 140 pictures of events of my life. Every horrid thing came out & I started the road of putting my life together. Then... 8yr ago... an accident at work. I had a disk to bulge in the C5 on my spine that touched my spinal cord. I was paralized on my right side. 3 surgeons would not touch me. They said any mobility I had was better than the risk of surgery. I could not pick up a cup of coffee, dress myself... the list is endless of what I wasn't able to do. One day I picked up a paint brush the size of an ink~pen. I held my wrist & began painting. The pain was more than I can possibly describe. I did not miss a day painting for 2yr straight. I now have full range of motion. My max weight I can pick up is 40#. I rehibilated myself. No Drugs. No over-the-counter medications. No surgery. Painting is what healed me. Painting, time, & an extreme WILL to improve my life. So to answer the original question... "What do I want to do when I grow up?"... I want to help everybody. Everybody from infants in diapers to elderly...(in diapers). Art has always been a part of my life & all through my life I have used it to help others. So I now have a destination... How do I get started?

Hello everyone! I'm kind of new to this site but I really enjoy all of the information it provides. I'm finishing up my AA in psychology and next year I plan to attend FSU to work on an art therapy degree. I hope to work with people who have various mental illnesses but honestly, as long as I'm helping people through art then I'm open to any group of those in need! I'de love to hear you're thoughts! - Allyson :)

I have a questions, who are doing Art Therapy.
Currently, I am doing BSW(social work for undergraduate) and planning to go to MSW (master's degree). Now, probably after that i am planning to go to Art Therapy. do you need to be talented? even if I do 18 art courses, I am afraid that my portifoilos will not be good as other talented people...
Good thing that my school has minor in Art Therpy, so I will experience what is really Art Therapy is like before I dedicate to this career along with clinical social work area. please give me some good advices about getting into art therpy. or better way to do. I want to do both areas, not for money, but for people all over the world.

I tried art therapy only once. I attended because I feel that this kind of therapy is non threatening. (compared to other therapies I had attempted) Unfortunately at the session I felt that the therapist also needed therapy. She shared too much (from my point of view). At the end of the session I felt more depressed, down, and this heavy feeling lingered) I felt quite cheated because the fee was quite expensive.

However, something good resulted from that experience. I discovered art. :-)

when I finally get a job, I plan to submit my self in another therapy.

Dear Art Therapy,
I just wanted to say that it so nice to know that there are so many people as a passionate about the arts and healing as I am. I am a mixed media artist and use mediation and intuition as an avenue to explore and free the creative mind. I recently have been doing talks and writing articles regarding my technique and style. I have a nursing background and found dissapoontment in the traditional medicine. I later studied healing arts by looking at the emotional cause of illness using spirituality and meditation. I had a oppurtunity to go to art school and shortly after being there I started exploring deep levels of healing relating to making art. and then it just seemed impossible to not combine the two. Even though, I may not have the certain credentials ( from and art therapy school) I feel the process, I use takes one into a deep inner peace and that is where the healing can happen, and also something beautiful on canvas or paper. Please feel free to look at my website and let me know what you think, It is nice to know that there is a whole community out there with the same like- mindedness.
my webiste is www.artofjacquelinedrake.com
Let me know if I can contribute anything to your ongoing support of arts and healing within the community.
Please feel free to contact me,
Thanks again for the great site-
Jacqueline Drake
Ps-- it is nice to know that there are so many schools now available for Art Therapy- I am looking at one here in Mi... maybe in the future - Thanks again-

My friend and I created a make your own kit to help those who want to art journal and don't know where to start. We are both single moms, I am an artist, she is a graduate of MFT and had talked to me about art therapy journaling during her schooling. I approached her with this idea and now we have it out there. In fact it was such a cool thing I entered it into a design contest (Index Design Award 2011) because art and therapy is something very needed in this world. Hope you take a moment to go and check our new idea out to those who need it.

Hi! My name is Louise, a senior of Spectrum High School, and I'm doing an argumentative paper; I would like to use your blog as a source for my paper, but I don't know and can't find who the creator of this blog is. So if the person who made this artistic blog could tell me his/her name and a sentence or 2 about his/herself that would be great. Also then I can promote art therapy through my paper! :) thanx!!!

Why are there virtually no Art Therapy programs in the South? I live in New Orleans and believe that the communities in NOLA could greatly benefit from such a wonderful modality, especially considering the trauma of Hurricane Katrina/Rita and the emotional scars that continue to linger 5 years later.
It's so disappointing that there are no programs anywhere near here since I am unable to relocate at this time. My dream is to become an Art therapist, as I am sure many others are in the same boat as myself...I would enroll in a minute if there were available AT programs within reach.

To become an art therapist, the first thing that is important is creating creating creating! Dr. Bruce Moon will tell you that is the MOST important thing to being a good art therapist-- to be an artist yourself. Yes, you will take alot of counseling techniques classes and psychology, but you must also understand the tools and materials necessary to help your clients express themselves. One of the best programs around, especially for students that do not have art therapy in their area, is Saint Mary of the Woods, Indiana. Reason? Because you create your projects and write your papers on your own, in your home/studio etc. You will only have to attend the week long intensives - one in jan, one in June and one in July. During the intensives we share, bond, create and engage, and leave with new friends, more knowledge and a refreshed spirit. The college is surrounded by woods, has a labyrinth meditation circle and horses, llamas and garden. http://www.smwc.edu/

The LYRIC CENTER FOR EXPRESSIVE ARTS is a center for individuals eager to learn how to paint and appreciate art for children and people with special needs who will express themselves through expressive arts and music appreciation. The first of its kind in the Philippines, the center addresses the unique differences and needs of individuals through one-on-one interventions designed to help each individual to achieve a higher level of personal self sufficiency, confidence and success in his/her respective school or community than would otherwise be accomplished in a typical classroom education. Lessons are individually planned and are held in a wholesome and welcoming setting that can be electronically monitored through close circuit camera.

The management and teaching faculty of the Center are promoting and propagating the use of our specialized teaching techniques to trainers/teachers and facilitators designed to benefit the special needs beneficiaries and special education units, youth groups, day care centers, and senior citizens.

Hello,

Am so glad I found this webiste!! It is packed with great info and very inspiring. I am an artist myself with a background in Naturopathy, have been teaching art in high schools and am now studying towards a diploma in Counselling. I'd like to combine art with natural health and am grateful for any ideas/comments. I live in Australia - does anyone know if I could call myself an Art Therapist....? or.... Many thanks

HI, I am so glad to have stumbled upon this site! I am ready to apply for some classes to become an art therapist. My own art has given me SO much release (I am a painter/printmaker, and graduated with a BFA). I was told (in a not-so-friendly way) last night by someone who works in social services here in Maine that this would be a waste of my time as there is no demand for art therapy. I felt like I was punched in the stomach. This is my dream job, and I am hoping that I can get some feedback in regards to general demand for art therapists.
Thank you SO much.

@alex Not sure what the market is like in NY right now, especially with the economy still being a little frail. It might be worth monitoring jobs for art therapists in your areas of interest, just to get a sense of demand.

This site has been helpful! i'm currently debating on whether or not to get my masters in art therapy; I will be graduating with a BFA in a few months.
Hi Jeannine,I am a retired Art Therapist.I wondered what to do next for years and wasted that time.I think am older than you because it was a brand new field when I finished high school.I am not so sure I followed the right path but it is my path and has worked out pretty well for me.I first became an art major with a minor in Philosophy. Then I studied Theology and then I found a program that had classes in art Therapy in the summer.I worked in a state facility a with dev.disabled adults.Once I started taking classes and meeting other Art Therapist I learned alot. I took about 32 hours of Art Therapy. Some classes were taught by the pioneers. My advisor was Harriet Wadeson. She was the person the organized the Art Therapy summer camp. From that point I got in touch with the art Therapy certification people and found out if I had studied enough,They said yes that I could do a practicum and internship while being supervised.I would recommend that you go to a school that offers Art therapy and maybe take afew more classes in Psych. You will be in the circle before you know itand the sooner the better. There are many paths to becoming registered and i think you will do fine .Go for it.Lorayne,Kankakee ,IL

Greetings,
I have really been enjoying this website. As someone who has been extremely interested in Art Therapy for many years I am finding that it is time for me to return to school and get my degree in Art Therapy. I have a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in NYC and have worked as a photo editor/graphic designer. I paint, draw and dabble too much in fine art photography and would like to incorporate all of this into Art Therapy. My problem is that I am very confused about what degree I have to go for. I only have a couple of psychology credits. I am confused as whether I have to complete a degree in Psychology and then Art Therapy. Any help would be greatly appreciated! keep up the great work on this site. Reading what you have posted is almost like therapy for me :)
