This article is just the thing to share with my colleagues who don’t understand what I do. They may not still, but at least it validates my work in a way that will allow for the continued autonomy I enjoy that may be threatened by the bean counters in these tough economic times.

I know art is something that can help him but I haven’t come across art lessons here in the Philippines designed for kids like him. I wish there is. Any suggestions on how we can do art therapy ourselves? Thanks.

Gilbert

I have some questions about art therapy. We have been doing art with our son, Alex, for several years. He is non-verbal, autistic, and 17 years old. He functions on a second grade level, and is very patient (can sit in an activity for up to an hour). Lately, we’ve tried charcoal, paint, string, clay (pottery), stamping, beading (as in bracelets which he sells), etc. I need to try another activity, but am stumped. Are there any activity-based art therapy books out there that anyone can recommend? The goals are increased communication, sequencing, and then selling the product (he practices money and social skills at the craft fairs), and of course, enjoyment. Please e-mail me at dmartin65@verizon.net if you have any suggestions. Thanks, Diana

I found each child to be far more amiable and co-operative after they had been allowed to express themselves with art. Sometimes that took half the day, but who cares? It worked. To enter the world of an autistic child is a wonder, you MUST let go of all expectations and bounderies that you feel are ‘necessary’ for them to learn. You need to become a child again yourself as they see the world through very different eyes to us. But it is a journey that will bring tears of joy, laughter, pain and love, and make you realise that its not a weird theory to say that these children are more in tune with the spirit world. They simply ARE and we, have a hard time understanding and accepting that, as we cannot measure it or prove it by scientific means…
